AirVoid

Flap up, dodge the pipes, don't look down. AirVoid is a fast, punishing little arcade game about staying alive for as long as you possibly can.

Controls: Space to flap

How to play: Tap Space to keep your bird airborne and thread the gaps between incoming pipes. One touch and it's over, so is drifting too high or too low off-screen. Every pipe you clear adds to your score. Simple to learn, brutal to master.

Project A — The first entry in the GAD series

AirVoid is Project A, the very first game in my Game Alphabet Development (GAD) series, a long-term personal challenge to build 26 games, one for every letter of the alphabet, each one picked based on whatever I wanted to learn at that point in my journey. Projects aren't made in alphabetical order, instead, they're made based on the skills and ideas I want to chase next.

This one marks the actual starting point. Before AirVoid, I hadn't built a full game loop from scratch, so this project exists to nail the fundamentals: player input, collision, spawning, scoring, game states, and just generally getting something playable out the door.

The core game was built by following Game Maker's Toolkit's Flappy Bird clone tutorial on YouTube, using the free asset pack they provided via Dropbox. On top of the tutorial, I added my own features which includes menu and in-game exit/quit functionality and out-of-bounds death detection so the bird can't just fly off the top or bottom of the screen to cheese the pipes.

AirVoid isn't meant to be a technical showcase or a commercial release, it's the "hello world" of the GAD series, kept here to mark day one and show how far things go from here.

The GAD Series

The Game Alphabet Development (GAD) series is my long-term personal development initiative as a game developer: 26 games, 26 letters, each one built around a specific genre, mechanic, or technical skill I want to explore at that stage of my journey. The goal by the end of it is to have earned the experience and confidence to genuinely call myself a professional game developer.

Enjoy!
